I'm trying to figure out my content strategy and I keep going back and forth on this. everyone says niche down but then i see huge creators who make content about everything
Should I focus on one specific topic or make content about multiple things i'm interested in? i don't want to pigeonhole myself but i also want to grow
What's better - niching down or staying broad?
Re: What's better - niching down or staying broad?
Start narrow, expand later - that's the winning strategy
Here's the truth: broad channels only work if you already have an audience
why niching down works for growth:
attempt 1 (broad content):
Here's the truth: broad channels only work if you already have an audience
why niching down works for growth:
- algorithms can categorize your content easily
- audience knows exactly what they're subscribing for
- you become known as the go-to person for that topic
- easier to rank/get discovered in search
- sponsorships are easier when you have clear niche
attempt 1 (broad content):
- posted about fitness, productivity, tech reviews, travel
- 6 months: 340 subscribers
- people were confused what my channel was about
- only posted about home workouts for beginners
- 6 months: 4,200 subscribers
- clear value proposition
- months 0-12: hyper-focused on one specific niche
- months 12-24: gradually expand to related topics
- months 24+: can explore broader content, audience trusts you
- start: "budget meal prep for college students"
- expand to: "healthy eating on a budget"
- eventually: "college lifestyle tips" (fitness, studying, budgeting, etc)
Re: What's better - niching down or staying broad?
Niche doesn't matter as much as personality
I make content about random topics i find interesting - tech, philosophy, productivity, lifestyle, travel. currently at 15k followers and growing steadily
what actually matters:
the "lifestyle niche":
instead of thinking "i need one topic," think about who you're creating for
my channel isn't "tech reviews" - it's "content for curious millennials who like to optimize their lives"
that lets me talk about:
if forcing yourself into one niche makes you miserable, you'll burn out and quit
better to make varied content you enjoy than force niche content you hate

what actually matters:
- consistent personality/perspective - my "vibe" is consistent even if topics vary
- quality over categorization - every video is genuinely valuable
- authentic interest - i only make videos about things i care about
- target audience overlap - my topics appeal to similar type of person
