I have about 40 blog posts from the past year and most of them aren't ranking well. Should I focus on writing new content or optimizing the posts I already have?
What's the process for updating old posts to improve their rankings?
How do I optimize old blog posts for better rankings?

optimizing old content is one of the fastest ways to increase traffic
i increased my blog traffic by 60% in 3 months just by updating existing posts instead of writing new ones
my optimization process:
step 1: identify posts to optimize
aim to optimize 2-3 posts per week. prioritize posts that are close to page 1 already

my optimization process:
step 1: identify posts to optimize
- posts ranking positions 8-20 (page 1-2)
- posts with declining traffic
- posts on topics you can expand
- google your target keyword
- analyze top 3 results
- note what they cover that you don't
- check their word count, structure, depth
- add missing sections/information
- update outdated info and dates
- improve formatting (add headers, lists, images)
- expand thin sections
- add more examples or screenshots
- improve intro and conclusion
- improve title tag (make it more clickable)
- rewrite meta description
- add/improve internal links
- optimize images with alt text
- check keyword usage (don't stuff, but include naturally)
- change publish date to current date
- tells google this is fresh content
- can boost rankings significantly
- post that ranked #12 moved to #3 after update
- traffic to that post went from 20/day to 180/day
- took me 2 hours to optimize vs 6 hours to write new post
aim to optimize 2-3 posts per week. prioritize posts that are close to page 1 already

Updating old posts is fine but don't neglect new content creation
I see too many bloggers get stuck in "optimization mode" and stop publishing new posts. that's a mistake
why you still need new content:
don't fall into the trap of endless optimization. sometimes the best thing for your blog is just more comprehensive coverage of your topic
I see too many bloggers get stuck in "optimization mode" and stop publishing new posts. that's a mistake
why you still need new content:
- expands your keyword coverage
- builds topical authority
- keeps site active (google likes fresh content)
- gives you more chances to rank
- 60% of time: creating new content
- 40% of time: optimizing existing content
- you have 50+ posts already
- you have posts ranking positions 5-15
- your niche is well-covered on your blog
- you have under 30 posts
- you haven't covered your niche thoroughly
- you're building initial authority
don't fall into the trap of endless optimization. sometimes the best thing for your blog is just more comprehensive coverage of your topic
