Why did my viral video not help my channel grow?

So i had a video blow up last month , got 5k views when my normal videos get like 50 views. i was so excited thinking this was gonna jumpstart my channel growth but... it didn't really?
I went from 380 subscribers to 890 subscribers which is good but I expected more from 140k views. and now my new videos are back to getting 300-500 views like before. it's like the viral video didn't help at all long term
Is this normal? Did anyone else have a viral video that didn't actually change anything for their channel? i'm confused because i thought one big video was supposed to unlock the algorithm or whatever

Okay but you CAN capitalize on a viral video if you do it right. I don't think you maximized the opportunity
When you get a viral video you need to immediately:
1. make 3-4 follow up videos on the same topic while the momentum is hot
2. add end screens linking to your best related videos
3. pin a comment directing people to similar content on your channel
4. make a playlist featuring that viral video plus related ones
also check the traffic source of that viral video. if it went viral from suggested videos, look at what channels it was suggested alongside and make content similar to those channels
a viral video is only wasted if you don't follow up on it strategically. sounds like you just went back to your normal content instead of riding the wave

Yeah this is super common and it's really frustrating when it happens
The problem is that viral videos usually go viral for a specific reason that doesn't represent your normal content. people clicked on THAT video because of the topic or thumbnail, not because they wanted to subscribe to your channel
I had a video get 400k views and gained like 2k subscribers from it. but 90% of those subscribers never watched another video because they only cared about that one specific topic
The subscribers you get from viral videos are usually low quality. they subscribed in the moment but they're not actually interested in your channel overall. that's why your new videos didn't get a boost
The real benefit of a viral video is the revenue from those views and the slight authority boost it gives your channel. but don't expect it to permanently change your growth trajectory unless your other content is just as good

It is normal for you to have one viral video. Consistency is the key. If you follow up with related content, your channel will grow. Retaining audience requires you to consistently publish original and quality content from time to time.

Engagement with the video is more important than just views. Shares, comments and likes would make people stick around longer than just views. Views can only last if people who are genuinely interested in your content are attached. If people share your content, for example. your subscriber base will grow.
