I keep hearing about the 3 second rule on Tiktok. What does this mean exactly?

My views went from 5k average to 50k average just by fixing first 3 seconds.

What I changed:
  • Put the most interesting part first
  • Added text overlay asking question
  • Removed all slow buildup
  • Started with movement or action
Tiktok users scroll fast. you have 3 seconds to make them stop

Think of the first 3 seconds as your thumbnail. If it doesn't grab attention immediately, you already lost

Test different hooks. some videos i make 5 different versions with different first 3 seconds to see what works

Tiktok 3 second rule determines if you get 1000 views or 100k views

The 3 second rule: If people scroll past your video in first 3 seconds, tiktok stops showing it to more people

Tiktok algorithm judges your video on:
  • Watch time in first 3 seconds
  • Completion rate
  • Rewatches
  • Engagement (likes, comments, shares)
First 3 seconds need to:
  • Hook attention immediately
  • Show what video is about
  • Create curiosity or shock value
  • Make people want to keep watching
Bad first 3 seconds:
  • Slow intro
  • Talking before getting to point
  • Boring visuals
  • Nothing happening
Good first 3 seconds:
  • Immediate action
  • Text overlay with compelling question
  • Visual that grabs attention
  • Payoff or transformation preview
I tested this. videos with strong first 3 seconds get 5-10x more views than videos with slow starts

Tiktok 3 second rule is real. optimize your hooks or your videos die
