How long should Twitter threads be for best engagement?

I want to start posting twitter threads but I'm not sure how long they should be. I've seen everything from 5 tweets to 50+ tweets

What length gets the best engagement and actually gets read all the way through?

I've tested thread lengths extensively and here's what works best:

optimal length: 7-12 tweets

why this works:
- long enough to provide real value
- short enough that people actually read to the end
- fits the "list format" people expect (7 tips, 10 lessons, etc)

threads that are too short (3-5 tweets): don't provide enough value, people won't bookmark or share
threads that are too long (20+ tweets): people lose interest halfway through, completion rate drops

my thread structure:
1. hook tweet with promise of value
2-10. one clear point per tweet
11. summary tweet
12. call to action ("follow me for more [topic]")

also some thread tips:
- number your tweets so people know the length upfront (1/10, 2/10, etc)
- make each tweet valuable on its own
- use the first tweet as a table of contents
- end with a call to action

engagement drops significantly after tweet 12. if you have more to say, split it into multiple threads

track your analytics. check the engagement on each individual tweet in your thread to see where people drop off

I'm going to disagree. some of my best performing threads have been 25-30 tweets long

if your content is genuinely valuable, people will read long threads. the key is keeping every single tweet interesting

i posted a 28-tweet thread about my startup journey that got:
- 280 new followers

completion rate was about 40% which is actually good for a long thread

when to make longer threads:
- telling a complete story (story threads can be longer)
- comprehensive guides (people expect depth)
- case studies with data and examples

when to keep them short:
- quick tips/advice
- listicles
- controversial takes

don't artificially limit your thread length. if you need 20 tweets to tell your story properly, use 20 tweets. if you can say it in 8, use 8

The "7-12 tweet rule" is for average threads. but the threads that go viral are often longer because they provide exceptional value

Focus on value per tweet, not total length
